Romantic weekend getaways, cool-weather adventure sports, historic explorations, family fun and business-related excursions can brighten up the dog days of winter. And where better to escape cabin fever than Washington County and the surrounding area — with its stunning natural attractions, historic sites, recreational opportunities and booming business climate? Whether you come here to work or play, you’ll find a selection of overnight accommodations sure to satisfy any type of traveler.

Romantic Retreats
Couples looking to steal away for romantic destinations might consider sweetheart spots like The Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, W.V., The Inn on Potomac in downtown Hagerstown or Stone Manor Country Club in Middletown, Md.

Sip a glass of wine in the moonlight on a balcony perched over the Potomac River at The Bavarian Inn. The antiques-filled rooms inside the Alpine chalet-style inn — including the Royal and Presidential suites, with fireplaces, Jacuzzi baths and panoramic river views — are just as exceptional as the sight of the grand structure atop the riverside bluff. After a hand-in-hand stroll along Shepherdstown’s cobblestone streets, indulge in an authentic German meal in the Bavarian’s Greystone mansion or, weather permitting, on the slate patio surrounded by stone walls.

At The Inn on Potomac — a stately century-old Victorian with four suites tastefully appointed with heirloom furnishings — lovers can indulge in the sensual Loving Couple Massage Weekend package, which includes hands-on instruction from a licensed massage therapist on techniques of relaxation massage. Get pampered at the full-service Tranquility Salon on the first floor before enjoying a night on the town in the Hub City, sip a drink in the parlor, and wake up to a tasty homemade breakfast.

Experience an English-style getaway at Stone Manor Country Club, complete with a personal chef to prepare a gourmet meal served in-suite. Modeled after European five-star hotels, Stone Manor features six elegantly appointed suites with fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. Couples will delight in details like chocolate truffles placed on pillows and meticulously manicured gardens for relaxing walks. The common dining area’s candlelit tables and crackling fireplace might also stoke the flames of romance!

Places In Time
History buffs can stay a stone’s throw from their favorite Civil War attractions at accommodations such as the Inn at Antietam and Jacob Rohrbach Inn in Sharpsburg and the famous Gettysburg Hotel in nearby Pennsylvania.

Built in 1908, The Inn at Antietam sits on a lot adjacent to Antietam National Battlefield and right next to the national cemetery. The inn’s five suites feature period furniture and décor befitting the historic locale. The Penthouse Suite includes a solarium view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and overlooks battlefield hills, while the Smokehouse Suite —  originally a summer kitchen — offers a massive fireplace and loft sleeping space. Innkeepers Charles Van Meter and Bob Leblanc specializing in fueling guests’ bellies with delicious breakfast fare prior to battlefield expeditions.

Trade historical tidbits over breakfast with other guests at the The Jacob Rohrbach Inn, circa 1804, before heading out for a energizing battlefield hike. Gifted to the original owners by Lord Calvert, the inn’s four suites and a newly restored separate cottage suite — the original summer kitchen — are accessorized with Civil War memorabilia. One of the guest suites is Jacob Rohrbach’s bedroom and the site of his murder by Confederate scouts.

The Best Western Gettysburg Hotel, next to the site where President Abraham Lincoln completed his Gettysburg Address, offers digs as drenched in history as the hotel’s environs. Established in 1797, the centrally located hotel has hosted prominent figures including President and Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Carl Sandburg, Henry Ford and Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. The newly renovated landmark blends traditional furnishings with modern amenities in its more than 90 guest rooms, including luxury suites and family efficiencies.

Family Fun
Our area’s wealth of recreational activities attract visitors of all ages — but you might have a hard time getting the kids out of the hotel pool if you stay at such family friendly lodging establishments as Hagerstown’s Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express or Homewood Suites by Hilton!

Unpack the kids’ bags and plug in your laptop. The Hampton Inn goes the extra mile to satisfy families. Children will fancy the “lodgenet” movies on demand. With high-speed Internet access, kids can IM their friends while checking e-mail. Running short on time in the morning?  Feed the family before stepping foot outside the hotel, at no cost, with the hotel’s hot buffet-style breakfast. Warm-weather travelers also will enjoy the outdoor pool. Whatever the season, your family’s needs will be met with panache at this Hagerstown hotel.

Penny-wise parents will revel in cost-effective amenities when kids under 19 stay for free at the Holiday Inn Express. And there’s room for the grandparents, too! Spacious suites feature microwave ovens, refrigerators, wetbars and sofabeds. The facilities make it easy to prepare inexpensive meals or add sleeping space for your child’s friend. Plan a play day nearby at Chuck E. Cheese, or go on a shopping spree at Valley Mall.

You’ll find a home away from home at Homewood Suites by Hilton, where suites offer the privacy of separate living and sleeping areas. Families will make good use of the fully equipped kitchens — complete with microwave, two-burner stove and dishwasher — to ease the pinch of always eating out. Homewood’s indoor pool, fitness center, putting green and basketball court offer plentiful options for every activity level. And with high-speed Internet access, multiple televisions with premium cable in the suites and free children’s video rentals, kids, parents and even grandparents can stay happily entertained during evenings in.

Al Fresco Adventures
Unlace your hiking boots and prop your skis in the corner; it feels so good to relax at lodging venues such as Breezee Hill Farm Bed and Breakfast in Clear Spring, 1828 Trail Inn in Hancock and the Inns at Whitetail and Mercersburg Inn in Pennsylvania after a day of outdoor adventure.

Perfect for the active couple seeking a romantic setting after a day on slopes at nearby Whitetail Mountain Resort, hiking the C&O Canal towpath, or exploring Fort Frederick State Park, Breezee Hill offers one suite on a 70-acre cattle farm. Guests can soothe sore muscles in the whirlpool tub and unwind in front of the fireplace or on the feather bed in the tastefully appointed guest suite.

Ski straight to your room at the Inns of Whitetail, which boasts 17 luxury “condo-tel” rooms — combining the convenience of an in-suite kitchen with the service of a hotel — and 18 townhomes and mountainside cottages for short- or long-term rental. Nestled at the foot of the mountain, these lodgings have spectacular views and make it possible to siesta between morning and afternoon ski runs.

A more intimate atmosphere, The Mercersburg Inn is just minutes from the slopes. The turn-of-the-century Georgian mansion features 17 lavish rooms with plush feather beds, Victorian décor and a spectacular restaurant. Ski and Stay packages include double-room occupancy, two discounted lift tickets and breakfast for two.

Access the C&O Canal and Western Maryland Rail Trail just steps from The 1828 Trail Inn in Hancock, a Craftsman-style home overlooking the Potomac River. Establish “base camp” in one of the four guest rooms — some with Jacuzzi tubs and scenic river views — nibble on complementary afternoon snacks between outings, and start a fresh day of adventure with a full chef’s choice breakfast.

Put It On Your Expense Report

Stay connected with wireless high-speed Internet access throughout the hotel, voicemail and multiple telephone lines. A business center with access to fax, copy and printer services is available to help you get any job done. After a long day, sweat your stress away in the fitness center or take a relaxing dip in the heated indoor pool and spa.
