Caring for Hearts
State of the Art Cardiac Care Programs Treat Patients Close to Home.

by Krista Brick

• • •

About every 34 seconds, an American will suffer a heart attack. That adds up, according to the American Heart Association’s “Heart Disease & Stroke Statistics” 2010 update, to an estimated 1,255,000 new and recurring heart attacks in 2010, plus an additional 195,000 silent heart attacks this year. The numbers are surprising, but not quite as surprising as finding yourself in the midst of a life-threatening crisis.

At just 48 years old, Avis Bean hadn’t thought much about the pressure she felt in her chest. She thought it might have been severe heartburn from a steak sandwich she had eaten. But, after a visit to Washington County Hospital’s emergency room, physicians determined Avis was experiencing a heart attack. “I just thought it was something I’d eaten,” she recalls. “I was really shocked.” Reacting quickly, doctors opened her artery with a stent at Washington County Hospital’s state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab.

Instead of risking precious minutes traveling by helicopter or ambulance to a far-away medical center, patients like Avis who require urgent, life-saving cardiac procedures such as angioplasty and cardiac stents can be treated at Washington County Hospital, Frederick Memorial Hospital and Chambersburg Hospital. These three area hospitals are now able to treat thousands of cardiac patients close to home with cutting-edge programs and facilities once only available at larger regional hospitals like Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania. “We are treating these patients sooner and adding years to their lives,” says Debbie Malick, director of critical care services at Washington County Hospital.
