Splish Splash
Dive into Friendships and Lifelong Memories This Summer at the Local Pool.

by Charissa Beeler Stanton + photos by Seth Freeman

• • •

The sounds of children at play echo in the air: squeals of delight as tiny feet emerge from the end of the slide and friendly voices call to one another. It’s a sonic landscape not much different from those at nearby parks — except that splashes mark the end of a wild slide ride, and the calling voices are frequently searching for Marco Polo. This is life at the pool, where the inviting blue water is filled with smiling swimmers of all ages, clad in a rainbow’s worth of brightly colored bathing suits and swim trunks. Nearby, sun-kissed arms and legs dangle from the edges of poolside chaise lounges.

A visit to the community pool is one of the most refreshing ways to battle the hot summer sun. And area residents flock to the cool relief of pools in Williamsport, Hancock, Waynesboro’s Northside Pool and Halfway’s favorite Martin “Marty” L. Snook Swimming Pool. More than a refreshing dip, they offer safe gathering places for families and children to socialize during the summer months. On any given day at the local pool there are moms bringing their children together for play dates, toddlers making new friends splashing each other in the baby pool, and families enjoying time together playing games, cooling off in the water. And the memories of whopper cannonball splashes, goofy dive attempts, pruny fingers and toes and nestling into a sun-warmed beach towel will last a lifetime.
