| | | Do It Yourself: Carpets Maintaining Your Carpets Enhances Your Environment and Protects Your Investment.
• • •
by Russ Ellis
Clean homes are great to live in, aren’t they? A clean environment makes us feel comfortable, helps relieve stress, eliminates distractions and encourages well-being. Being clean also inhibits allergens such as dust, dander, dust mites, pet hair, mold and mildew. And when it comes to carpets, flooring and upholstery, keeping clean also can protect your investments in those items.
Fiber manufacturers have spent millions of dollars in research and development to hide the soil within individual fibers so carpets appear cleaner and brighter for a longer period of time. But when dirt gets trapped in and among carpet and upholstery fibers, it rubs on them as they are walked on, resulting in pre-mature wear. Getting the dirt out with frequent vacuuming, emergency spot removal and regularly scheduled professional cleaning means less wear on carpet and upholstery fibers.
Carpet Care Tips Most new carpet warranties require regular cleaning by an IICRC Certified Firm and Certified Technician, and a receipt must be kept on record in case the consumer would have any warranty concerns. Remember, by the time you see the soil build up it is beyond soiled — it’s filthy! Here are some tips for maintaining your carpets to help them last as long as possible:
• Depending on how much traffic your carpet sees, vacuum at least once a week. If you live with pets and/or children, it could be wise to vacuum high-traffic areas every day. Don’t forget to vacuum thoroughly around walls and baseboards. AmeriClean’s advice is to vacuum your carpets more often than you think necessary to remove the dry soil before it builds up — and to use a quality vacuum with a HEPA filter. • To remove a small spot, use a solution made up of ¼ teaspoon of original Dawn® dishwashing liquid diluted in 32 ounces of water. Use a terry towel or microfiber cloth to blot the spot — don’t soak the carpet too much — and follow up by blotting with a mixture of four parts water and one part white vinegar to remove residue. It takes patience and effort to remove a spot correctly and completely. • Schedule regular professional cleanings that include deep soil extraction with hot water. Your cleaning schedule will depend on the amount of foot traffic and the number of children and pets in your home.
Maintaining your carpets makes good sense in every home and office. You’ll enjoy a comfortable place to live and work, and you’ll also protect your investments.
