Welcome to Hagerstown

From miles of pristine countryside to a culturally diverse historic Downtown, Hagerstown is filled with so many attractions that you might have a hard time deciding where to start. The area boasts gorgeous national, state and local parks; dozens of fascinating museums; recreational choices ranging from biking to whitewater rafting; and fabulous shopping and dining opportunities.

Whether visiting for business, pleasure or a combination of the two, there are many interesting options for spending your time. No matter what their interests, families, groups and individuals will find countless ways to fill their days. History buffs will glory in the rich heritage. In fact, many events that shaped our nation happened right here. Interested in Civil War history? Close at hand is Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg — a great place to begin your Civil War tour — and the nearby South Mountain Battlefield State Park is a hidden historical treasure. You won’t want to miss the stirring Salute to Independence at Antietam, featuring the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and a breathtaking fireworks extravaganza. Thousands of visitors turn out to this event each July. Likewise, our nation’s largest illumination ceremony, the Antietam Memorial Illumination in December, offers a stunning display of 23,110 luminarias, each representing a casualty of the bloodiest single-day battle in American history.

A variety of outlet, mall and specialty shopping areas will keep retail enthusiasts entertained for hours on end. Fitness fans will discover endless places to practice their sports of choice — including biking, hiking and canoeing. Those longing for adventure can take a whitewater rafting trip, race down a 400-foot water slide or explore natural caverns. Lovers of art and culture will revel in the county’s many galleries and such popular attractions as The Maryland Theatre and Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.

All that exploration and learning will certainly work up an appetite, and you’re in for a real treat, because Hagerstown is brimming with fantastic restaurants and nightspots. No matter what you’re hungry for, you’ll find an establishment offering your favorite cuisine. At the end of a long, busy day, relax and recharge at one of the many wonderful resorts, hotels, motels, bed-and-breakfasts or campgrounds. With so many things to do and see, you’ll soon be planning your return visit.
